Young children with cystic fibrosis (CF) exhibit a more pro-inflammatory gastrointestinal microbiome, which may underlie impaired nutrient absorption according to the study “Metagenomic evidence for taxonomic dysbiosis and functional imbalance in the gastrointestinal tracts of children with cystic fibrosis,” published in the journal Scientific Reports. The results suggest that therapeutics modulating the intestinal microbiome in these children may improve their health and fat absorption.

Early nutritional intervention and monitoring for respiratory and gastrointestinal disease in the youngest cystic fibrosis (CF) patients is vital to improving long-term outcomes. Clinical care guidelines specific to infants with CF, and nutrition and pulmonary guidelines for children over 6 years of age do currently exist and they are published by the CF Foundation. However, a gap exists in clinical care recommendations pertaining to preschoolers, or children aged 2 to 5.

“I was two years old when I was diagnosed with Cystic Fibrosis (CF). It has taken me twenty-five years to come to terms with the disease. I’ve spent the greater part of my life trying to convince myself I was normal, that I could lead a normal life. I did not want to confront the realities of the disease because there is currently no cure. Existing therapies are directed toward merely mitigating its symptoms. I felt I couldn’t allow myself to confront the reality of my health because I did not have any real hope that it could change.”
