After waiting for a year, Carrie Giddens has received a much needed lung transplantation. Carrie, who is married to Craig Giddens, suffers from cystic fibrosis (CF) and, like many other CF patients, a lung transplant was her only option. Now, Craig has decided to write a letter to the family of the donor, Amy, telling them about the life that was saved due to the donation.
“A Letter to My Wife’s Donor Family” was read by Craig Giddens in a recently released video, resulting in a touching testimony. “It has not been easy to figure out what to say to you. I don’t believe language is capable of grasping the extent of my gratitude or emotion,” starts Craig Giddens letter. “However, I’ve decided that the best way to thank you is to tell you about one life that Amy saved.”
The video was launched in recognition of National Donate Life Month, which is celebrated every year in April. The National Donate Life Month was instituted by Donate Life America and its partnering organizations in 2003 with the purpose of encouraging people throughout the United States to register as organ, eye and tissue donors. With local, regional and national activities, the celebration also honors those that have saved lives through the gift of donation.
Patients who suffer from cystic fibrosis often run out of options and need a lung transplant to improve their quality of life. During the surgical procedure, the unhealthy lungs are replaced by healthy lungs from a donor. However, this is a complex process and many patients need to wait a long time for a donor, as well as weigh up all the risks and benefits before deciding to undergo a transplant.
