Facebook Group ‘OutRUN the Odds’ to Raise $3,800 for Cystic Fibrosis

How today’s healthcare industry approaches cystic fibrosis (CF) has come a long way since the mid-1960s, when individuals diagnosed with CF rarely lived up to the age of 10. Fortunately today, thanks to fervent efforts from all over the globe, those afflicted with this genetic disorder have the chance to live well into their 40s and older.

One example of a still-living person who received her diagnosis when she was 8 years old is Liz Shuman, who is turning 38 this year on the 6th of September. To celebrate, Shuman’s friend since childhood, Nicole Cretella Burke, came up with the ‘OutRUN 38’ — where a group of OutRUNNERS will help raise funds for The Cystic Fibrosis Foundation (CFF).

The group is asking running enthusiasts to join the Facebook group, and together post records of the miles they have recently run, in the hopes of reaching a cumulative mileage of 38,000 run miles and raising a total of $3,800 for the CFF. Just after a few days of launching their Facebook group, it filled quickly with members and support from all over the globe. Some even plan to wear an ‘L’ on their backs as a show of support for Liz Shuman.

The group is expecting to reach its first goal of 38,000 miles within the coming 2 weeks. Once they do, they will be celebrating Cystic Fibrosis Awareness Month by extending the goal to 380,000 miles.

The notion of using running and athletic events to raise awareness and funding for cystic fibrosis has recently caught on with other advocacy groups as well. Another group has organized a fundraiser for CF, entitled “Walk for Cystic Fibrosis,” which aims to collect $10,000 to back ongoing and future efforts to combat this disease.
