Nutek Withdraws Baby Wipes Due to Bacteria Harmful for CF Patients

McElhattan, Pennsylvania-based Nutek Disposables is conducting a voluntary product recall on the United States for their baby wipes, due to a report of bacteria in some of the packages, which may be dangerous for cystic fibrosis (CF) patients in particular. The wipes were manufactured under the brand names of Cuties, Diapers.com, Femtex, Fred’s, Kidgets, Member’s Mark, Simply Right, Sunny Smiles, Tender Touch, and Well Beginnings, and the recall is being conducted in retail stores.

A microbial examination conducted by Nutek revealed the presence of the Burkholderia cepacia (B. cepacia) bacteria, after consumers have complained about the odor and discoloration of the baby wipes. The discovery of the bacteria led to the recall campaign of both the wipe lots that tested positive, and other baby wipes, which had been distributed by Nutek before October 21, at Walgreens, Sam’s Club, Family Dollar, Fred’s, and Diapers.com retail stores.

Even though the presence of B. cepacia represents a small medical risk, Nutek decided to engage in the voluntary withdraw as a preventive measure. The bacteria may be harmful for individuals suffering from health problems, such as weakened immune systems or chronic lung diseases. Cystic fibrosis patients are particularly susceptible to infections due to B. cepacia. Therefore, the company is advising anyone who used the wipes and suffers from a disease of these kinds to seek medical advice.

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA), which has been working in collaboration with Nutek on the case, is encouraging both patients and healthcare professionals to report adverse events or side effects they believe are related to the use of Nutek baby wipes to the FDA’s MedWatch Safety Information and Adverse Event Reporting Program.

The recall began on October 3, and since then, there was only one claim of irritation reported. Even though the company has received several other complaints, including symptoms like rash, irritation, infections, fever, gastrointestinal issues, and respiratory issues, Nutek stated that they have no way of confirming if these cases are directly related to the bacteria present on their products.

Nutek has also announced that they don’t know yet what caused the problem, but that they are investigating the case. In addition, they have interrupted their shipping of baby wipes. Consumers can return the products acquired at the place of purchase and receive a full refund, and if they have any questions, they can contact Nutek.
