A ringing bell labed

The 10th Annual Glow Ride for Cystic Fibrosis (CF), held Sept. 21 at Hermosa Beach, California, exceeded expectations by raising more than $65,700 to support families experiencing financial difficulties due to extended hospital stays.

That’s according to Claire’s Place Foundation, a nonprofit that provides support to children with CF and their families. The funds raised at last month’s event will go directly to the foundation’s Extended Hospital Stay Grant Program, which helps families cover essential living expenses, such as rent, home utilities, and other monthly bills, during prolonged hospitalizations.

The goal is to provide families affected by CF financial peace of mind so they can focus on accompanying their children during hospital stays and caring for their health.

“Many of our grant recipients live in constant fear of bills piling up while they’re in the hospital,” Melissa Yeager, executive director of Claire’s Place Foundation, said in a press release. “One recipient recently shared how our program lifts that burden and gives them the breathing room that they desperately need.”

The most successful Glow Ride yet

CF is characterized by the buildup of thick and sticky mucus, particularly in the lungs and gastrointestinal tract, that can lead to lung, digestive, and other symptoms. These complications may require hospital care, often in a city far from home. Hospitalizations can be lengthy for those with CF, affecting patients’ and caregivers’ quality of life and imposing a financial burden.

This year’s Glow Ride event featured hundreds of supporters of all ages riding on roller skates, bikes, and skateboards decorated to produce a beachside spectacle. Participants also enjoyed a silent disco provided by three DJs and could take photos featuring a giant rainbow arch to share on social media.

Those unable to be there in person could participate virtually from any location. The event was featured on FOX 11’s Good Day LA, hosted by anchor Sandra Endo. According to Claire’s Place Foundation, this was the most successful Glow Ride in the fundraiser’s history.

Vertex Pharmaceuticals, which markets all approved CFTR modulators, was the event’s title sponsor.

The foundation was cofounded by Claire Wineland, who was born with CF and died in 2018 at age 21 from complications following a double-lung transplant.

In addition to offering families financial support through grants, the organization also creates hospital playrooms for children to enjoy during their stay. A network of families is available as well to provide emotional support and help those newly diagnosed with CF to navigate the care process.

“We are deeply grateful to each Glow Ride sponsor and every participant — your contributions make a difference in people’s lives every single day,” Yeager said.
