In this “Making it Matter” podcast video made by Gunnar Esiason for Boomer Esiason Foundation, Gunnar and Julia Rae talk about cystic fibrosis being an invisible illness, meaning people won’t always be able to tell someone has a chronic disease just by looking at them.

Read about nine things you shouldn’t say to someone with a chronic illness.

The duo discusses the pros and cons of having an invisible illness and some of the problems that can come along with it. Julie feels that a positive is being able to go about her daily business without people knowing that she has a chronic illness and therefore not being judged for her illness or having people make assumptions as to what she can or can’t do.

However, the flip side is that people can often accuse cystic fibrosis patients of not being sick–disabled parking passes are a prime example, where people with invisible illnesses have used a disabled parking pass only to suffer abuse from people who think because they can’t see their illness, that they must be faking it.
