• How do you manage mental health?

Posted by William on August 7, 2024 at 12:54 pm

Recently, I’ve begun going to therapy to help deal with mental health issues and to try to become a better husband, son, friend, etc. We all within the CF community have our struggles, including those who may have negative side effects to Trikafta.

How do you deal with your mental health issues? Do you take any medicine to combat what you are going through?

I truly could do a much better job at managing my mental health. I am hoping that if I begin to speak more to those around me instead of bottling everything up inside, I will be able to find help and advice to get me through my stress and more difficult times.

Speaking to loved ones is always a plus. They care deeply for you and only want the best for you.

Therapy’s been a game changer for me too, and honestly, I think it’s underrated how much just talking openly can help clear some of the mental clutter. I also use a bit of cannabis, specifically the knightsbridge og strain, on the really heavy days. It’s super calming without shutting me down completely, just enough to take the edge off anxiety and help me reset.

Definitely not a fix-all, but as part of the toolkit (alongside therapy), it’s made a real difference.

Do you smoke it or ingest it as a gummy?

I usually smoke it, just feels quicker and easier when I need something in the moment. Gummies are nice too, but I stick to smoking when the anxiety spikes and I need relief fast without waiting around.

I’ve been on both sides: meds during really rough patches and now more focused on CBT and mindfulness work. Having a mix of daily structure, honest conversations, and a few “off switches” like music or walks helps me reset. Still a work in progress, but I’ve come to see mental health like physical health, always worth the upkeep.
