• Overcoming Routine Fatigue

In her recent column post, Nicole Kohr expresses her frustrations with maintaining a routine and shares things that help her overcome “routine fatigue.”

“Routine wants me to be structured and consistent, but my brain has different plans. For the most part, I thrive on creativity and inspiration. This is unfortunate because both cystic fibrosis (CF) and lung transplant are unpredictable.”

Do you struggle with the monotony of routine? How do you make managing your healthcare routine less boring or exhausting?

I’m a sucker for routines and it’s hard for me to break from routines. I do my absolute best during the work week to stick to the same daily plan. On the weekend it’s different and I’m not as strict about routine like I am Monday-Friday, but I still try to get to bed between 10-10:30.

Personally, I can’t say that I experience “routine fatigue.” The only part of my life that follows much of a routine is my healthcare. My respiratory treatments have been a “built in” part of my day for so long that I don’t even really think about it anymore — I just do them. Things like pills and sinus rinses, those all happen in the morning and evening as well (following treatments). The rest of the day is kind of “anything goes” and I find a schedule far too stressful and constricting to be beneficial. I do enjoy the loosely structured routine of my mornings and evenings though.
