The Cystic Fibrosis Foundation’s 2022 CFF Impact Grant program is now accepting applications from individuals or nonprofit groups seeking funding for projects that support cystic fibrosis patients or their families in their everyday lives. Those wishing to develop such efforts — particularly virtual support programs — also may apply.

A CFF Impact Grant provides up to $10,000 annually for up to two years. The application deadline is April 5 at 5 p.m. EDT. Applicants are expected to be notified by June, and the earliest start date for awarded projects is July 1.

“The best ideas come from experience, and no one knows the ins and outs of life with CF like the CF community!” the CFF states on a webpage about the program.

In particular, the organization is encouraging submissions from those with ideas for “innovative online engagement programs” for adolescents with CF and for patients’ siblings.

Applicants must be U.S. citizens or permanent residents of the country. Go here for a complete listing of grant eligibility requirements.

Proposed grant programs or projects should:

  • Be aligned with CFF goals, which are to collaborate with the CF community and other organizations to develop efforts that help patients and their families in their day-to-day lives.
  • Comply with all pertinent policies and guidelines, including those regarding infection prevention and control.
  • Benefit a significant number of individuals or an underserved segment of the CF community. Projects or programs that might be scalable to a national level also will be considered.
  • Include active and ongoing involvement of patients or family members who would benefit from the initiative.
  • Present a new or original idea, or be an ongoing project or program that has had a measurable impact in the CF community. Note that program content need not focus directly on cystic fibrosis to be considered.
  • Describe processes and resources necessary to implement the effort, including clearly stated and focused objectives, specific milestones and measures of success, and a detailed budget.

The program or project must not seek to or claim to provide patients with professional, medical, or clinical advice, and must not be focused on clinical or basic research. A grant should not be sought solely for the purpose of buying equipment, and may not be used for lobbying or fundraising activities. CF Foundation chapter groups or accredited CF care centers are ineligible.

Applications will be evaluated by an external review panel and forwarded to the organization’s vice president of community partnerships for final approval.

The grants will be paid in two installments: the first payment will be 75% of the awarded amount, depending on the effort’s length.

Applications should be submitted for a one-year period. However, awards may be renewed for a second year, depending on approval of the required renewal progress report and fund availability.

Letters of support from two different individuals who either have benefited or will benefit from the effort must be included in the application. The letter writers should support the applicant or, where applicable, the role of the applicant’s organization.

Past recipients of the CFF Impact Grant program — which opened in 2016 — have produced efforts that included voice lessons to build respiratory strength and self-confidence, online wellness coaching and personal training, and virtual job training workshops. Go here for information about last year’s three awardees.

Three virtual 2020 grants were renewed for a year, including Work Proudly, a program that helps CF caregivers and adult patients identify potential careers, covers the cost of certificate job training, and provides tools and equipment for remote work.

“With the support of an Impact Grant, Work Proudly provides adults with CF and their caregivers with training and equipment to secure flexible, remote work,” the foundation tweeted about the opening of grant submissions.
