Advocates around the globe are gearing up for a variety of events and digital campaigns this week to kick off Cystic Fibrosis Awareness Month. From neon-lit bike rides in California to national walks across Canada, these May initiatives seek to fund life-saving research and highlight the “invisible burden” of living with cystic fibrosis (CF).

“During CF Awareness Month this May, we are inspired by every person with cystic fibrosis and members of the CF community who support them. This year, we’re focused on recognizing the invisible burden of life with CF,” the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation, a U.S.-based advocacy group, states on its website. The foundation is encouraging advocates to share their stories and spread the word on social media, using graphics and templates available on its site.

Throughout May, advocates in different parts of the world will host a variety of fundraising activities. Claire’s Place Foundation will host its 12th Annual Glow Ride on Saturday, May 9, in Hermosa Beach, California. The event features biking (or skating, or walking) with glowing gear in honor of people with CF. This year’s ride will feature special moments dedicated to honoring mothers.

Honoring the strength of mothers and caregivers

“At Claire’s Place, we see every day the extraordinary strength and dedication of moms in the cystic fibrosis community,” Melissa Yeager, the foundation’s executive director, said in a press release.

She noted that this year’s Glow Ride focuses on celebrating these women and creating a joyful space where they feel supported and understood.

“We ride for parents sleeping in hospital rooms, for adults managing CF while building independent lives, and for caregivers, siblings and loved ones who show up every day,” Yeager said.

The ride also provides a meaningful way for families to celebrate the mothers in their lives. Claire’s Place Foundation is named in honor of its founder, Claire Wineland, who launched the organization at age 13 while living with CF.

Major fundraising efforts will be held on May 31 with events in both Canada and Ireland. In Canada, advocates are preparing for the Walk To Make Cystic Fibrosis History. This national event offers both in-person and virtual options, ensuring everyone can participate regardless of location. Across the pond, Cystic Fibrosis Ireland will be hosting the 15th edition of its One in 1,000 Campaign for the Vhi Women’s Mini Marathon to boost support for local patients.

Athletes from Team Boomer are also hitting the pavement this month to support the Boomer Esiason Foundation. As the athletic arm of the organization, the team raises funds for research and direct patient assistance. Throughout May, members will compete in several high-profile international races, including the 2026 Prague Marathon, 2026 Copenhagen Marathon, and 2026 TB Five Boro Bike Tour.
