Do you believe that CF defines you?
In a recent column by yours truly, I expressed my belief that CF defines who I am – and that that’s okay. Often, those of us with CF wrestle with identity and how we want to be defined.

No, I do not believe CF defines me in any way. I am more than my disease, I am a child of God and God does not make mistakes.

I recently had someone say to me “You know that CF doesn’t define you.” They meant well, my disease doesn’t hold me back, which I totally 1000% agree with, but I found myself feeling slightly bothered by that statement. I decided to do some digging to try and figure out why that comment didn’t sit right. I concluded that yes, I’m more than my disease, but I’m not ashamed of it. In fact, I’m proud to have CF, to show that I’m living and learning to thrive with it. It’s something that makes me unique, it empowers me to be the best version of myself. It has given me a mission and purpose in life. The challenges and the setbacks I’ve experienced due to CF have reinforced the drive in me to raise awareness for a cure. I’m thankful for every single day I have because I’m not guaranteed tomorrow. I wouldn’t be the person I am If I didn’t have CF, so ultimately I’m grateful for it!

We’re definitely on the same page, Logan. It’s definitely not meant to be a slight or ill intentioned. The same goes to being called a “hero”. It’s meant to be positive. However, when you live with it, it does define you because you do have to do things differently in life opposed to an able bodied person.

While I do not have CF myself, I can certainly understand how CF (or any medical condition) may feel defining to those with it, but I do not believe that being defined by CF has to be synonymous to being beaten down by it. Keep the faith, focus, and positivity as best as possible. 🙂

Definitely agree! No one should let CF beat them down.
