• Empowering your loved ones with CF

In my trials and tribulations with CF, advocating for myself has been fundamental to my health. I ask myself how I ended up so bold, while learning to maintain my cool with kindness. And, I look back on how my parents took on raising a child with CF.

And one of the single most important lessons I was learning as a child and adolescent (without even knowing) was watching how my mom handled my CF. She armed herself with knowledge and was constantly aware of the latest updates on medications; she gracefully presented her latest findings to my doctors; and when things didn’t sit well, she would speak up.

I was trained by the best, and I find myself plucking up courage by asking “what would my Mom do?” She would ask questions, she didn’t care if she sounded dumb. Or in situations where I knew something is wrong, I’ve surprised myself by demanding that I be seen or approached differently.

I don’t think there is a better lesson.

    1. For people with CF, what ways did you learn to empower yourself?
    2. For family members, how do you give your loved ones the space to empower themselves?
