  For-profit healthcare

  A contentious topic in America and, obviously, in rare disease communities as well is for-profit healthcare. I have strong opinions that healthcare itself, as an industry, should not be for-profit. It makes me extremely uncomfortable to think about pharmaceutical companies, insurers, or hospitals profiting of our disease and our sickness. I do understand the arguments to the contrary, but ultimately, I just can’t square it in my mind and moral compass.

  1. What are your thoughts on for-profit healthcare?
  2. If you’re opposed, what alternatives do you suggest? And what would you say to proponents?
  3. If you’re for it, why? What do you say to its critics?
