  • Having to say you’re sick

Since I was in middle school, there has always been a lot of fear in saying I couldn’t make it to school, an event, or canceling plans because of being sick. I think saying it so much and so often, made me question the legitimacy of me being sick. And, for whoever was on the listening end, I’d worry they thought I was lying.

With time, I recognized a lot of what impeded me from “owning” that I was sick, was shame. Shame that I couldn’t live up to the expectations I had for myself. Shame for having a body that wasn’t like everyone else’s.

Just literally this year, I’m working through that. I found myself so proud to call into work, without fear or procrastination, to say “Hey, I’m sick. I can’t come in.”

    But it takes a lot.

So my question for you is:

    1. Do you find yourself in a similar cycle of shame?
