AbbVie recently announced that the 2015 AbbVie CF Scholarship is now open and accepting applications from both graduate and undergraduate students. This scholarship supports and honors young adults suffering with cystic fibrosis (CF) in their pursuit of higher education. Students can apply for the scholarship until May 27, 2015, 10 a.m. (central time) through the website: www.AbbVieCFScholarship.com.
For the 23rd year now, AbbVie’s CF Scholarship will recognize and honor exceptional students that have cystic fibrosis and who demonstrate academic excellence, creativity, community involvement and the ability to serve as positive role models for the entire CF community. There will be a selection of forty scholars who will each receive $2,500 each to spend over the 2015-2016 school year. Furthermore, recipients will have the chance to compete for public votes to win one of two Thriving Student Scholarships for a total award of $23,000. Through its scholarships, Abbvie has already awarded over $2.5 million.
“Each student who is awarded an AbbVie CF Scholarship serves as an exceptional role model of how academic excellence and community leadership can be achieved while managing a chronic disease,” stated Jim Hynd, AbbVie representative. “AbbVie has rewarded the outstanding efforts of these students for the past 23 years, and we are proud to continue our investment in the futures of those living with CF.”
AbbVie has an ongoing commitment to the CF community, and these scholarships are part of that mission. There are about 30,000 adults and children suffering with CF in the United States and about 45 percent of those with the disease are 18 or older. CF is a chronic disease that damages patients’ lungs and digestive systems through the overproduction of a sticky and thick mucus caused by specific DNA mutations. This mucus causes difficulties in breathing and often leads to lung infections and malnutrition because of a poor nutrient absorption in the digestive system.
A note to applicants: it is not necessary for applicants to have taken or intend to take any product or medicine produced by Abbvie; that is not a criteria considered in the selection process. All CF patients in college or graduate school are welcome to apply at www.AbbVieCFScholarship.com.
