The seventh annual Glow Ride for Cystic Fibrosis, hosted by Claire’s Place Foundation, will resume along the coast of Los Angeles, California, on Aug. 21.

Last year’s cystic fibrosis (CF) fundraising event was postponed out of consideration for safety measures related to the global COVID-19 pandemic.

“Since my daughter Claire’s passing, we have been working hard to carry on her legacy, her foundation,” Melissa Yeager, the foundation’s executive director, said in a press release.

“Each year,” she said, “and particularly during the pandemic, the number of requests from young CF patients and their parents desperately seeking assistance with their bills have increased.”

The 3.4 mile-long ride connects the Hermosa Beach Pier and the Manhattan Beach Pier.

Participants are invited to make the ride via bike, skateboard, roller skates, or other such vehicles, and to decorate themselves in “whimsical glowing lights” — all part of what organizers hope will be a memorable experience, with corresponding remarkable photos.

Funds raised through the event will support the foundation’s Extended Hospital Stay Grant Program. This program provides individuals and families living with CF with essential living expenses to help manage the costs of extended hospital stays. Rent and utilities are among the monthly expenses that more than 600 families and individuals had help with for the past 10 years.

Event tickets are $45 and include a Glow Ride T-shirt and a raffle ticket. A beach cruiser from Hermosa Cyclery will be raffled after the ride. Hermosa Cyclery also is providing free bike rentals to participants.

The ride began offering an option to participate virtually in 2019, which will continue this year, allowing communities anywhere to fundraise in their own neighborhoods. Those interested may register online and select “start my team” after checking out.

In addition to Hermosa Cyclery, other event sponsors include Vertex Pharmaceuticals, NorthStar Moving Company, Marlin Equity Partners, Athens Services, Firstline Home Loans, Topo Chico, UCLA Health, Redondo Mitsubishi, and Manhattan Dermatology.

The Claire’s Place Foundation is named in honor of its founder, Claire Wineland. Wineland lived with CF her entire life and passed away in September 2018 at the age of 21.

“Our Glow Ride event is vital to raising funds to help these vulnerable families,” Yeager said. “Claire would be absolutely thrilled to know that we continue to get our glow on!”
