Claire’s Place Foundation is encouraging supporters to “light up the night” as part of its 9th annual Glow Ride for Cystic Fibrosis on Aug. 12 to help defray living expenses for cystic fibrosis (CF) patients and their families.

In addition to the Hermosa Beach, California, event, an East Coast Glow Ride will take place in Boston the same night. Registration is open for both rides, presented by title sponsor Vertex Pharmaceuticals. Participants around the globe also may sign up for virtual fundraising.

The goal is to raise $50,000 for the organization’s Extended Hospital Stay Grant Program, which pays for expenses such as rent and utilities for families whose child was hospitalized for at least 14 consecutive days during the last year. So far, more than $27,000 has been raised for the grants, which have been in high demand this year.

“This is a difficult financial year for the CF community. We are experiencing a record number of grant requests and we are trying to keep up. The funds we raise at the Glow Ride help keep a roof over their heads and their lights on, alleviating the stress of paying bills while experiencing an extended hospital stay due to this life-threatening illness. We need you! Please join us on August 12th, put your glow on and help us support these families in need!” Melissa Yeager, executive director at Claire’s Place Foundation, said in a press release.

How do I get my Glow Ride on?

The event invites supporters to walk, hop on their skateboards, lace up their skates, or affix lights to their bikes to create a vibrant spectacle. Participants can roll to the sounds of DJ Potira and the Soundbox Truck, and even hop in a photo booth with a pal to take pictures to share on social media. Beach cruiser bikes are available for free for those who need to borrow one. Reservations are required.

Tickets are $45 each, with each purchase including a limited edition Glow in the Dark T-shirt, glow wristband, and items for bike wheels. Virtual fundraising tickets are $10. There will also be prizes for those who reach $500, $1,500, and $5,000 fundraising milestones, including customized Glow Ride tote bags and water bottles.

In California, the 3.4-mile event starts at Hermosa Beach Pier. The inaugural Massachusetts Glow Ride begins at Fan Pier Park and rolls along the Boston Harborwalk to the Boston Aquarium and back.

“Our Glow Ride for CF is a one-of-a-kind evening with family and friends! Each year we get glowing reviews,” Yeager said. “As our flagship event, the Glow Ride always delivers fun with purpose.”

Glow Ride was recently recognized as a finalist for the Los Angeles Business Journal’s Fundraiser of the Year.
