Claire’s Place Foundation is preparing for its 5th Annual Glow Ride event to raise money to support families affected by cystic fibrosis.

The 3.4 mile-long bike ride will take place Saturday at 5:30 p.m. at the piers of Hermosa Beach and Manhattan Beach in California.

In addition to in-person riders, for the first time this year the Glow Ride also is open to virtual riders. The Claire’s Place Foundation encourages people from around the world to help in the fundraising efforts, and to ride their own glow-decorated bicycles in their communities.

Funds raised from the Glow Ride will go toward the Claire’s Place Foundation Extended Hospital Stay Grant Program. This program seeks to help families affected by cystic fibrosis by providing financial support to help them cope with the costs that come with having to spend an extended period of time in the hospital.

“My daughter Claire was very clear that her one wish was for us to carry on the mission of her foundation,” Melissa Yeager, Claire’s Place Foundation executive director, said in a press release.

The foundation was named in honor of Claire Wineland, a cystic fibrosis patient and activist. Wineland died Sept. 2, 2018; she was 21.

“Since her passing a year ago, we have been working hard to do just that. Each year, the number of requests from young cystic fibrosis patients and their parents, desperately seeking assistance with their bills, increases. The foundation simply does not have enough funds to support all of the requests. Our Glow Ride event is vital to raising funds to help these families. Claire would be absolutely thrilled to know that we continue to get our glow on!,” Yeager said.

Corporate sponsors of the this year’s Glow Ride include NorthStar Moving CompanyHermosa CycleryBluewater Grill Redondo BeachWestern Truck Insurance ServicesNew Haven Moving Equipment, and Manhattan Dermatology. In addition to being a corporate sponsor, Hermosa Cyclery will provide free rental bikes to participants in the Glow Ride.

Tickets for the ride cost $40. This covers a custom glow-in-the-dark T-shirt, as well as some additional glow-in-the-dark swag that can be used to decorate bicycles (or skateboards, scooters, or anything that needs a little extra glow).
