Here’s a weird question to end the week…

What brand of cough do you have?

(Haha. Yes, you read that correctly) Do you subscribe to the more low and wheezy methodology? What about wet and barking? Or maybe a going-off-the-rails runaway connectacough?

I would say I’m normally a low and wheezy person. Yes, wet (ew, I definitely produce sputum on cue a lot of the time), but I go through periods of dryness, and I’m also on the discrete, “tamp it down” side of things. If I’m in public, I’ll try to hold it until I feel like I’m going to explode, or I walk off by myself and bury my face in my elbow. I also have the once-you-start-laughing-you-start-rumbling rhythm down really well.

I have actually met some CF friends in the past- from afar, of course, although I know it’s not advised- and was surprised at how loud and proud some coughs can be. I of course can’t hear them (maybe that’s a good thing?) due to my hearing loss, but I could see how some CF friends cough openly, no arm-muffling, and with operatic finesse.

I definitely think our personalities can show in how we cough sometimes, you know?

    What about you?

    The Art of Coughing

    I rumble with affection
    It’s truly like an art
    With natural perfection
    A few minutes apart.

    DaVinci, Rembrandt, Shakespeare:
    They are like amateurs
Compared to what I do here
    A sad bunch of messieurs.

“To breathe or not to breatha”
We know not of that phrase
    And the Mona Sneeza
    Has never come our ways.

    I miss The Magic Flume
    Did Mozart call it off?
    And Rembrandt, I presume
    ‘s forgotten The Nightcough.

    While I was writing this
I made a lot of art
    I wheeze, I bark, I hiss
And do it all by heart.

    From now I will preserve
    All these sounds I do
And when they know my Oeuvre
    I will be famous too!
